Civil Services

Civil Services in India refer to the permanent executive branch of the Government of India. The civil servants are responsible for implementing government policies, maintaining law and order, managing public administration, and contributing to policy-making.

These services are considered one of the most prestigious career options in the country.

Civil Services Exam (CSE)

The Civil Services Examination is conducted annually by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). It is one of the toughest and most competitive exams in India.

Major Civil Services

The exam recruits officers for around 24 services, including:

IAS – Indian Administrative Service

IPS – Indian Police Service

IFS – Indian Foreign Service

IRS – Indian Revenue Service

IAAS, IRTS, IDAS, etc. – Other Central Services

Structure of the UPSC Civil Services Examination

1. Preliminary Examination (Prelims)

Objective type (Multiple Choice Questions)

Two papers:

• General Studies Paper I
• CSAT (General Studies Paper II – Aptitude Test)

Qualifying in nature (marks not counted for final ranking)

2. Main Examination (Mains)

Descriptive type (written examination)

9 papers in total:

• Essay
• 4 General Studies papers
• 2 papers of one Optional Subject
• 2 language papers (one English, one Indian language – qualifying only)

3. Personality Test (Interview)

Conducted for candidates who qualify the Mains

Assesses mental alertness, leadership, integrity, critical thinking, etc.

Eligibility Criteria

Nationality: Indian

Age Limit: 21 to 32 years (relaxation for reserved categories)

Educational Qualification: Graduate in any discipline
